The adepts of the founder of a worldwide-spread cult try to take advantage of accountants from Dnepropetrovsk.
Ron Hubbard, the founder of a number of pseudo-scientific teachings of Dianetics and Scientology is a model and an absolute authority for some people all over the world. Yet, his Scientology Church, which had been founded in the 50-es, is considered to be a dangerous totalitarian organization in some countries and in Germany it is even controlled by police. Even Russia tries to restrict its activity. But the situation is quite different in our country. It is more than half a year that we can see posters, advertising Dianetics on the fences, boards and walls of Dnepropetrovsk. Besides, we have recently found out that Hubbard’s management techniques are being successfully introduced in a number of organizations. One of Ukrainian accounants’ magazines is one of them. A Wealthy Cult We won’t tell much about the rules of Scientology. The doctrine tells about improving the human personality, achieving the freedom of personality and other goals that seem to be very noble. But these ideals turn out to differ from the real state of things. A quotation form the Christian website tells the following: “Dianetics and Scientology are parts of a powerful international cult with significant level of assets. It provides some “therapeutic sessions” where they make clients feel euphoria with the help of hypnosis. The adepts are persuaded that there is some universal conspiracy against them, that they are the chosen ones and that they should criticize and reject every criticism and strive for gaining international power according to the schemes, provided by scientology”. One can hear similar things during the trials against this organization and in find them in notes about this organization’s being a social hazard. Many sources mention that scientologists use hypnosis and controlled trance techniques. Scoring points out After I had first heard that scientologists are rife and rampant in “Nuance” magazine (the name was changed. - Author) in Dnepropetrovsk, I couldn’t help laughing. But then I had to believe it. This is what one of the magazine’s former employees of the editorial board told me: - The magazine is interested in making its audience larger. They don’t only edit periodicals; they also carry out some annual accounting congresses and seminars, so it has strong influence on its target group. When they started introducing a new administrating system on the enterprise, we could not understand what it was. Some strange slogans were hung on the walls. People were given some scores for their work. Then they started firing the employees whose score was less than the others’ one. This was called “optimizing the work process”. Lots of people couldn’t stand it and left their work. Lots of gifted and qualified people left the company. The first one who tried to fight the Hubbard’s disciples and was brave enough to call a spade a spade was Andrey Kachura, a young PR manager. After he had written his article in the company’s corporate newspaper, he was fired in a day term. Work more, earn less - “Nuance” has really been cooperating with an “Efficiency School” consulting company from Kiev which is notorious for popularizing Hubbard’s techniques, - Natalia Polyshko, the former employee of the organization tells (the name was changed – Author). – First, all the managers were being sent to Kiev to have some training courses. Then they started organizing some seminars in our company, and some employees were against it. Hubbard’s books turned into some kind of our corporate Bible and it was impossible to argue with them. Then, they introduced the system of stats which took about 20% of all working time. There were constant attempts to evaluate the score of work which was impossible to be assessed this way. For instance, you can estimate the author’s work through the number of signs in his article, but it is impossible to use this score approach for evaluating designer’s model. But the salary depended on the score. - I did lots of additional tasks together with my obligatory ones at work – I was supporting the website and edited our corporate magazine, but it didn’t make my score bigger. After I tried to refuse to do this, the managers asked me to leave the company. It seems that the system is meant to make people work more and get less money at the same time. - I doubt if they do it like this – Andrey Kachura tells. – I never noticed if hypnosis techniques in “Nuance”. But I had recently heard that “Nuance” was reorganized. Most of employees were expelled from the staff and the contract form was recommended. Only a small easily-manipulated group of people was left. This is a very bad sign. Anyway, according to existing stats, the average term of the firm, which practices Hubbard’s management techniques is from five to ten years. Then it comes to an inevitable bankruptcy . What can accountants do Ron Hubbard, “the most humane person”, never tried to conceal his interest in gaining wealth through manipulating people’s mind. Here are some of his expressions “I want to make my brand new religion; this is the way to snatch a large profit” (this was told in 1949 in some lobby interview). “We have discovered a number of ways to turn people into slaves” (this is a quote from the lecture on Philadelphia Doctors’ Courses, 1952). “Scientology provides total freedom, but it should set its power and authority in order to achieve total discipline. Scientology won’t survive otherwise” (a quote from an Official Message, made on January, the fifth, 1968). “Make money, keep making money, make more and more and more money, make other people work so that they made money for you” (a part of Official Message 1972). Of course, it would be too bold to claim that the scientologists usurped account magazine in order to control cash flow. But this is what one of people from inside tells: “Just imagine that one day all accountants who had taken part in these seminars could transfer money to some banking accounting…” Besides, we might add that there is a common fact from psychiatry: after hypnotizing somebody, we can program him or her to do something right after he sees some “initiating code”, which might be a certain phrase in the magazine, and this would make you understand the importance of this issue. Financial religion Comment of Vira Tymchenko, the psychologist of Dnepropetrovsk “Dialogue” center for the help to the victims of destructive cults: - Ron Hubbard’s disciples propose both dianetics and Scientology to people, who are tend to be religious, and a set of tests and trainings which can allegedly develop their business. But the problem is that the quality of these goods is low and doesn’t cost the price, they want people pay them. For instance, a set of tests might cost 50 thousand dollars. And the trainings will also be very expensive. Besides, their methods of work include providing you your personal “ethics coach”. After you got him, you are strongly recommended not to apply to anyone else for psychological and psychiatric aid. They might even recommend you having no blood transfusion. This isn’t exactly turning people into zombies but it looks pretty much like it. Getting to Scientology Church might result into serious consequences including the full ruining of the personality. There were no cases like that in Dnepropetrovsk, as it is only the first wave of this commercial cult that has reached Ukraine. Long Live Hubbard! The management of “Nuance” magazines don’t hide their using Hubbard’s techniques. Here’s a quotation from an interview, they had given to Subscribe.ru: “A step by step introduction of Hubbard’s administration techniques, which lasted for 2 years (since 2005 0 Author) let us create a special corporate culture in the company. In this culture every member feels responsibility both for his personal result and for company’s efficiency as a whole. (…) But the main thing is that such a culture inspires effective members and helps us get rid of all the rest. (…) Members, who are not effective, leave work according to their own initiative and both he and the company leave pleased with this decision”. And here is the comment, given by Svetlana, one of the founders of “Nuance”: - I have been working in the firm since it has been created. So, after all, we have tried lots of administrating systems. After all, I don’t care what is the system’s name – it might be either Ron Hubbard’s or Norton Caplan’s system. But the fact is that after we had introduced stats system in 2007 our economic indexes improved a lot. Nowadays it is me who manages the business, and the business doesn’t direct me any more. As for people, who were fired, I can say that there are always some people in any company who want to get money for doing nothing. And our new system doesn’t let them do it. Before we enroll any new member of our company, we tell him about the principles of our organization. We say that we don’t worship scientology and don’t feel like making them adopt any religion. But we tell about Hubbard’s administration system. So, anyone can agree or refuse working with us. While telling that they have nothing to do with scientology, Svetlana gave me lots of books on scientology, CD-disks with Scientology church’s promos and asked me not to publish the article until I don’t realize Hubbard’s humane ideology. I think I don’t have anything to crown it up. Maybe, the only addition is Andrey Kachura’s opinion that a number of firms in Dnepropetrovsk are ruled by Hubbard’s disciples. These firms include children’s education, advertising agency and, according to the most recent news, a large system bank. It is also said that there are some adepts of Dianetics and Scientology in the governmental structures. That’s it. Anatoly Shilov
