Term “sect” is not new. All along human history there appeared groups of people headed by some charismatic leader, who led them to some aim. But within last 100 years the notion “sectarianism” got some specific features. Sect leaders are now not just charismatic; they also possess knowledge of psycho techniques which allow them to control people will, mind, and as a result, his soul.

What is “modern sect”?

There are five main features:

-        Existence of special doctrine. As a rule it is either a mix, or some new interpretation of existing creeds.

-        Presence of a ritual typical only for this sect.

-        Isolation from society and self contraposition towards it.

-        Use of manipulative techniques in order to impose some idea and to control consciousness of ordinary members, i.e. psychological violence.

-        Vivid and exceptional leader.

How does sect influence a person?

First step is recruiting. Different methods are used for that purpose. These methods are based on fraud and mind control techniques. Person is subjected to a kind of “love bombing”; that means a person is twined with warm “cocoon”; he constantly hears that he is wonderful, smart, kind, and unique. And sect needs him.

If person lacks all this in ordinary life, it becomes effective and attractive bait. And this is the main reason why it is hard for people to leave sect even if has spent not much time in it and is not fully doped and banned with obligations. It is hard for person to decline such an emotional support if he/she did not find his/her place in real world.

Love bombing grows into its logic continuation. Person is persuaded that it is here where he finds new different opportunities, i.e. development of his spiritual potential, reception of extraordinary abilities and influence on people, new friends. There are many sects, and there are many people looking for support. So, there is buyer for any good.

But, they use methods which are anti humane. Separation from previous life comes to power, i.e. tearing away all relations with family and friends. The person is made to break up with everything that was significant and good for him. But that is still not enough. The sect makes person to give up all his money and property. There are very few sects who talk about this at the very beginning; but it will happen inevitably. As a result person is completely isolated from the outer world both ideologically and practically.

After this consciousness control is used, i.e. control over information, behavior, thinking and emotions.

Information control is based on the fact that information is infiltrated by using different prohibitions: new-papers, magazines, Internet, books, films and even contacts with people outside sect. Alternative sources are used instead: books, films, brochures video and audio produced by sect. Information control has another verge. At the very beginning person is made to confess, and this information is recorded and used to compromise sectarian in case he wants to leave sect.

Behavior control is based on multiple and rigid prescriptions: whom to socialize with, what to wear, what and how much to eat (both food quantity and quality and sleeping hours are restricted. As a result, person becomes even more vulnerable and receptive towards outer influence. It happens because organism is subjected to stress). Most of the time is spent on rituals, mantras and praying.

All these things are done in groups; and it is not so simple. While mass actions psychological poisoning gets from group to individuals; they share emotional state, believes and sufferings. Rhythmic screaming, movements and particular way of breathing combined with psychological poisoning results in to euphoria and ecstasy. All these have great influence if you add lack of food and sleep.

Thinking control is reached with help of specific psycho techniques. Monotonous hum, declaiming, frequent repetition of prays and other specific texts are used so that person looses his ability to think independently. Any attempts to think are stopped immediately. No one can ask questions about leader; any doubts are considered to se sin. Specific intersect language, overloaded with difficult terms and notions, also plays important role. Person wastes all his logical power to memorize them and use them properly; so, he does not have time and power to understand them.

It is a copybook maxim that one who controls language controls consciousness. Moral borders are outlined clearly and primitive (black-and-white views). Its main principle is “step aside is treachery, jump is provocation”. The world is divided into black and white colors without any halftones; it is divided into two parts: “we” and “those who are against us”, i.e. all people who do not belong to the sect.

Emotions control accustoms person to so called emotional seesaws which are hard to jump off. On one side, there is “love bombing” mentioned above; on the other side, there is powerful negative attitude towards outer world and towards any adepts’ actions which disagree with sects’ requirements.  Intimidation and blackmail is used towards two last items.

Besides, person can be put into trance or hypnoses by using specific techniques. Drugs are often used; they cause euphoria, feeling of flight.

Physical and psychological exhaustion comes after all these manipulations and person looses freedom of will.

Then “new man” comes to life; and it is almost impossible to return to past. This stage aggravates state of things because leaders maximize social isolation. They provoke people by participation in criminal and terrorist actions; women are to sect by using their “divine kids” born in sect.

On this stage they use violence openly; they use both beating and raping together with grueling and disparaging hard work “for sect’s good”. Person becomes helpless and dependable. It is an interesting fact that if one takes person away from sect on this stage he will long to get back to sect. no one can get rid of this psychological dependence by alone.
